  1. (A) Add up all the children, page by page, as they get on the bus to come up with a total number of children on the bus.  Does it match Mr. Mathers' total?
    (B) Create a number sentence by showing hoe Mr. Mathers grouped children on each page. Ex: Kindergartners were eight groups of two so you would write 8(2)+ and go on to the next page.  Ex: 8(2) + 4(3) + 4(3) + 1 + 4(4) + 11 + 8
  2. (A) subtract children as they leave the bus.  Does the total difference match Mr. Mathers'?
    (B) Create a number sentence to show how the bus emptied. Ex: 76 - 15 - (16 + 5) - (1/2 x 40) - 12 - 7 = ? Go over the order of operations: solving problems in parentheses first.
  3. When Mr. Mathers put the kindergartners on the bus, which factors of 16 did he use?  What other factors of 12 are there? Could Mr. Mathers have used them? Why or why not?
  4. When Mr. Mathers put the grade oners on the bus, which factors of 12 did he use?  What other factors of 12 are there? Could Mr. Mathers have used them? Why or why not?
  5. (A) When Mr. Mathers put the grade twoers on the bus, which factors of 13 did he use?
    (B) Why did he use the factors of 12 instead?  Which other class' total was a prime number?
  6. When Mr. Mathers put the grade threers on the bus, which factors of 16 did he use? What other factors of 16 are there?  Could Mr. Mathers have used them? Why or why not?
  7. With the grade fours, write an equation using addition and subtraction to show how many children ended up in the aisle.  Ex: 11 - 2 + 1 =? Go over order of operations: addition and subtraction in order given.
  8. Divide class into groups.  Using 76 manipulatives for each group of children (different colored straws, buttons, or students themselves to represent each grade level). Go through the book and have students divide and group their manipulatives to coordinate with the story.
  9. Practice dividing prime numbers and try to keep track of those pesky remainders.
  10. Look for and define the math terms used on each page.
